Ethylene-sensitive Abscission Layer Formation and Petal Senescence in Cut Dahlia Inflorescences

چکیده
Cut dahlia (Dahlia Cav.) flowers have recently become popular in Japan, but their marketability is limited by poor vase life. During the postharvest period, senescence of petals initiates from outermost whorl and then proceeds into inner petals. We found that drawing resistances ‘Kokuchou’, ‘Nesshou’, ‘Saisetsu’ decreases with time because gradually detach ovaries. A reduction resistance occurred prior to end Exogenous ethylene treatment cut inflorescences accelerated decline petal thus shortened Ethylene production individual florets began before or on day harvest. Simultaneously, abscission layers developed at petal-ovary boundaries florets. The without ovaries, which did not form layer, had a longer life than Furthermore, we observed marked rise sugar contents ovaries compared those when maintained 2% fructose. These results indicate ethylene-promoted layer development directs course senescence, characterized wilting discoloration due blocking water flow carbohydrates

Role of Ethylene and 1-MCP in Flower Development and Petal Abscission in Zonal Geraniums
Geraniums are sensitive to ethylene during shipping and respond by abscising their petals. Treatment of stock plants with ethylene (ethephon) in order to increase cutting yield resulted in earlier flowering in Pelargonium × hortorum ‘Kim’ and ‘Veronica’, but did not result in increased susceptibility to petal abscission following exposure to 1.0 μL·L–1 ethylene. Treatment of ‘Kim’, ‘Veronica’, ...
متن کاملEthylene and flower longevity in Alstroemeria: relationship between tepal senescence, abscission and ethylene biosynthesis.
Senescence of floral organs is broadly divided into two groups: those that exhibit sensitivity to exogenous ethylene and those that do not. Endogenous ethylene production from the former group is via a well-characterized biochemical pathway and is either due to developmental or pollination-induced senescence. Many flowers from the order Liliales are characterized as ethylene-insensitive since t...
متن کامل1-MCP blocks ethylene-induced petal abscission of Pelargonium peltatum but the effect is transient
Continual exposure to 1.5 ml l ethylene caused 100% petal abscission within 2 h from detached flowers of Pelargonium peltatum (L.) ‘Pink Blizzard’ (ivy geranium) harvested just after the stigmatic lobes had separated. When flowering plants were first pretreated for 2 h with 1 ml l 1-MCP, ethylene-induced petal abscission was completely inhibited. However, the effect was transient, since percent...
متن کاملDeferral of senescence and abscission by chemical inhibition of ethylene synthesis and action in bean explants.
Three compounds known to inhibit ethylene synthesis and/or action were compared for their ability to delay senescence and abscission of bean explants (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv Contender). Aminoethoxyvinyl-glycine (AVG), AgNO(3), and sodium benzoate were infiltrated into the petiole explants. Their effect on abscission was monitored by measuring the force required to break the abscission zone, a...
متن کاملReversible inhibition of ethylene action and interruption of petal senescence in carnation flowers by norbornadiene.
The inhibitory effects of the cyclic olefin 2,5-norbornadiene (NBD) on ethylene action were tested in carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L. cv White Sim) flowers. Treatment of flowers at anthesis with ethylene in the presence of 500 microliters per liter NBD increased the concentration of ethylene required to elicit a response (petal senescence), indicating that NBD behaves as a competitive inhib...
